In this 2007 photograph, biologist Damian Danavall was shown setting up a liquid handling robot in order to perform a quantitative PCR analysis to detect the presence of Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2) . PCR, or polymerase chain reaction, produces large amounts of replicated DNA or RNA molecular sequences. Using this process, very small amounts of these nucleic acid molecules can be analyzed upon the completion of the replication process.
Mr. Danavall is a National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) staff member, who works inside the centers Laboratory Reference and Research Branch (LRRB).
The National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) is responsible for public health surveillance, prevention research, and programs to prevent and control human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), viral hepatitis, and tuberculosis (TB). Center staff work in collaboration with governmental and nongovernmental partners at community, State, national, and international levels, applying well-integrated multidisciplinary programs of research, surveillance, technical assistance, and evaluation.
