© 1994-2009 by Access Excellence @ the National Health Museum. Students simulate sexual contact by exchanging fluid from test tubes filled with water and one containing sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The acid-base indicator, phenolphthalein, reveals who has been infected. The students then investigate where the original infection began.

Activity Duration: 30-60 min

Cost: cost of supplies

Standards:

Health Education Standard 1

National Academy of Science Content Standards:

Grades 9-12

Science in Personal and Social Perspectives

Teacher comments:
High school teacher: I have reviewed several of these types of activities and know that students love things that change color. As a chemistry teacher I am really hesitant to give kids unmarked clear liquids--it is a violation of best practice for me. Although 0.1 M NaOH is not very concentrated, it does have potential risks, particularly for younger, less mature students. Rating: Acceptable

Virologist comments:
A good general exercise about spread of infectious disease. Rating: Acceptable

Panel three:HESITANTLY, MONA PUTS HER KEY IN THE LOCK, EYES DARTING TO ONE SIDE LOOKING FOR MORE IMMUNE CELLS. LOCK MAKES A ‘KLIK’ SOUND.

Panel four: THE LOCK IS OPEN. THE CELL OPENS.

MONA: IT’S OPENING.

Strip Three

Panel one: THE CELL HAS OPENED INTO A DEEP TUNNEL. MONA GOES IN.

MONA: I’M GOING IN.

Panel two: THE PROFESSOR, CAT, AND MOUSE IN THEIR POD.

PROFESSOR: THE VIRUS NEEDS TO UNLOCK GRANDMA’S CELL

PROFESSOR: …TO CREATE MORE VIRUSES.

Panel three: A BIG PANEL. MONA BURSTS OUT FOLLOWED BY TONS OF MONAS.

COMMANDER (IN THE BACKOUND): THAT’S HOW IT’S DONE!

SQUAD: (ALSO IN THE BACKGROUND. NO BALLOON): YAAAAY!
