Dr. Sue Swindells

Dr. Susan Swindells is a Professor in the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s department of Internal Medicine, Section of Infectious Diseases. In addition Dr. Swindells is Medical Director of the HIV Clinic at UNMC and the Terry K. WatanabeProfessor of Internal Medicine in the Section of Infectious Diseases. She also holds the responsibility of Director of the UNMC Ryan White Title III Program, the Nebraska AIDS Drug Assistance Program, and the Nebraska AIDS Education and Training Center.

A Native of England, Dr. Swindells earned her medical degre from the University College in London in 1977 and did postgraduate training in England and at the University of Washington in Seattle. A clinician and active researcher, Swindells has been principal investigator on many clinical trials. She is on the leadership of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group. An active teacher on the UNMC campus and outside, Swindells writes editorial and grant reviews and serves on several UNMC and College of Medicine Committees. She has published multiple articles in scholarly journals, and both contributed to and edited textbooks.

Dr. Swindells is an internationally renowed expert in HIV and recently co-authored the largest study ever conducted to evaluate commonly used HIV drugs. The study included 753 participants at 55 centers and was conducted as part of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG), the largest HIV clinical trials organization in the world. The project was funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
