Catherine Haorei
Intern
University of Nebraska Medical Center
Catherine Haorei works as a summer intern in the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience. Her research in Dr. Georgette Kanmogne’s laboratory focuses on the effects of HIV. She is responsible for performing daily lab experiments with HIV, including BCA assays, Western Blot assays, Densitometry readings, sectioning tissue, tissue cultures, as well as being responsible for keeping the laboratory a safe and sterile environment. Her work with HIV has given her the opportunity to work with different levels of biosafety, all the way to Biosafety Level 3 pathogens (considered to be the “warm” zone). In addition to her research, her internship enables her to experience a variety of presentations, speeches and seminars at UNMC.
Catherine has spent previous summers as an intern in the department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience, as well as working as a seasonal laboratory technician and participating in biological studies at the Henry Doorly Zoo. She has received various awards for academic and leadership achievements and placed 4th in the State Science Olympiad competition. She is a senior at Central High School and is looking forward to college where she will major in Biology on a pre-medical track.
